Practical Implementation Science is designed for graduate health professional and advanced undergraduate students who want to master the steps of using implementation science to improve public health. About the Author

Bryan Weiner, PhD is a Professor in the Departments of Global Health and Health Services at the University of Washington. Dr. Weiner’s research focuses on the implementation of innovations and evidence-based practices in healthcare. Over the past 23 years, he has examined a wide range of innovations including quality improvement practices, care management practices, and patient safety practices; as well evidence-based clinical practices in cancer and cardiovascular disease. His research has advanced implementation science by creating knowledge about the organizational determinants of effective implementation, developing new theories of implementation, and improving the state of measurement in the field.

Kenneth Sherr, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington. Dr. Sherr’s research focuses on developing and testing practical solutions to support data-drive decision making and service integration into the primary health care framework to improve health system coverage and quality. Dr. Sherr has led the development of implementation science training curricula in the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington, including the development of the Ph.D. program in implementation science in 2012.

Cara C. Lewis, PhD is a clinical psychologist, Associate Investigator at Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute and affiliate faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. She is Past President of the Society for Implementation Research Collaboration and co-founding Editor-in-Chief of the proposed SIRC journal. Her research focuses on advancing pragmatic and rigorous measures and methods for implementation science and practice and informing tailored implementation of evidence-based practices. She is also a Beck Scholar with expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Each chapter begins with learning objectives, followed by case studies, figures and tables, bullet points, and a chapter summary. Key points and common pitfalls for each topic can be found throughout the chapters accompanied by discussion questions and a complete reference list at the end. A comprehensive glossary with key terms and new jargon can be found at the end of the book, followed by an index. The book provides access to an online resource with downloadable PDFs for each chapter, a hyperlinked reference list and in-text citations, all tables and figures, and quick access to chapter citations. Instructors can acquire an additional class syllabus and manual, PowerPoints, and a bank of test questions via the website provided with approved access.
Purpose: Designed to meet the needs of students studying implementation science, this book addresses the research-to-practice gap for evidence-based interventions. The book claims to be the first textbook designed for classroom use that establishes key practices for discovering and addressing obstacles preventing the adoption, application, sustainability, and improvement of health interventions. Providing a sound foundation in implementation science with ample opportunities to promote further education, the book is both worthy and needed. Online presentation of the textbook enhances the readability of the book but does not add any additional pedagogical value to the book aside from the limited access resources for instructors. Objectives outlined by the authors in the preface are appropriately met throughout the text and didactic elements of the book.
Audience: Intended for graduate and advanced undergraduate health professional students, the book provides introductory information on implementation science followed by detailed chapters requiring previous exposure to the fields of health science. Additional access found on the Springer website provides complementary classroom resources and teaching aids for instructors. With appropriate tables and figures, ample case studies, key points, and common pitfalls, the book meets the needs of students and includes sufficient resources for instructors. All three editors are from the same university; however, they consulted a diverse set of contributors to ensure multiple perspectives and sound credibility on the subject matter.
Features: The book covers each component necessary to plan and implement evidence-based interventions into action. Each chapter contains sections on common pitfalls of implementation science, promoting deeper understanding of the intricacies of this practice and challenges that need to be overcome. Writing is clear and an exhaustive glossary at the end of the book ensures mastery of the information presented. The book provides information equally available on the website and thoroughly covers the subject area.
Assessment: With thorough explanations on the importance, practice, and implications of implementation science, the book provides detailed definitions and in-depth examples to promote comprehensive understanding of the subject. Other titles on implementation science exist; however, this title is unique with its exclusive focus on the field of health sciences. The quality of the book is enhanced with the abundant resources for students to engage in deeper understanding.
