Description: This is the second edition of a book originally titled Cardiovascular Pathology that has been expanded to include both neoplastic and non-neoplastic entities of the lung and thymus.
Purpose: It is intended as a comprehensive but concise reference for diseases arising in the thorax (excluding the esophagus and bone).
Audience: The audience is community and academic pathologists, residents, and forensic pathologists. Clinical specialists who frequently treat entities involving the lung, mediastinum, or heart, such as cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, pulmonologists, and subspecialized oncologists, would also find this book helpful.
Features: The book is primarily organized into parts according to anatomic site (lung, mediastinum, and heart). Each part is further divided into sections that address specific types of entities, usually beginning with non-neoplastic and concluding with neoplastic. The lung part initially covers pediatric and congenital lung disease, diffuse parenchymal, diseases of large and small airways, infections, emphysema, autoimmune and alloimmune lung disease, pneumoconiosis, iatrogenic lung disease, and vascular lung disease. It then moves onto benign lung tumors, carcinomas of the lung, lymphoid lung lesions, and other malignant lung tumors. Finally, it concludes with disorders of the pleura. The mediastinum part covers thymomas, thymic carcinomas, non-neoplastic lesions of the thymus and mediastinum, germ cell tumors, and hematologic and soft tissue tumors of the mediastinum. The heart part addresses systemic diseases affecting the heart, ischemic heart disease, cardiomyopathies, myocarditis, transplant pathology, and valvular disease, as well as heart and pericardial tumors. It ends with diseases of the thoracic aorta. Each entity is discussed in an organized manner, first addressing the clinical and radiological findings and then moving onto the gross and histological features and differential diagnosis. It concludes with treatment considerations and prognosis. When relevant, guidance on tissue sampling and molecular testing is offered.
Assessment: This is an excellent contribution to the literature. One of its primary strengths is the extensive breadth, as it covers virtually all entities affecting the lungs, heart, or mediastinum. The photographs are abundant (average of 3 - 4 per page) and excellent in quality, similar to what one would encounter in an atlas. The book nicely covers recently described entities, such as primary pulmonary myxoid sarcoma, and addresses the most recent approach to molecular characterization of lung tumors. These features and the concise nature of the book make it a great reference for use during sign-out of surgical pathology specimens.
