Description: This updated sixth edition emphasizes the value of healthcare professionals across the medical field (MDs, DOs, PAs, NPs) working together in collaborative practice. With a focus on adolescent to adult health disorders and related issues, the 1,500-page text covers a breadth and depth of information for the primary care provider to consider. Helpful diagnostic and differential text boxes provide a useful summary of key decision-making considerations. There is holistic coverage of considerations for the primary care medical provider, including health promotion, office emergencies, and algorithms for management.
Purpose: This text provides in-depth, evidence-based primary care as both a reference and preparation for clinicians in adult primary care. Major adult disorders seen in an outpatient medical office are covered from adolescence to the geriatric lifespan, including interprofessional collaboration, referrals, and consultation highlights. Authors from academic and clinical subject matter experts across various medical disciplines cover recommendations, pharmacotherapeutics, diagnostic considerations, and treatment rationales to include ordering tests, prescribing medications, and guidance in overall management.
Audience: The audience includes primary care clinicians who treat patients from adolescence (defined here as the start of puberty) through adulthood. The text emphasizes the aging population and issues of polypharmacy, chronic conditions, and the strain on human and time capital allotment to do "more" in less time.
Features: The book provides a deep dive into symptom-based presentations through chapter designations of the "Evaluation and Management of" a particular body system (skin, eye, ear, etc.). The systematic formatting of each chapter includes epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation (physical examination), differentials, diagnostics, management (to include pharmaceutical considerations), complications, and patient and family education. Emergency and physician referral icons provide guidelines and attention to immediate consultations and emergency identifications. Assessment: This much-needed, up-to-date rendition of primary care works includes new chapters on translating research to clinical practice, coordinated chronic care, health literacy, health care disparities (including LGBTQ care), and cultural responsiveness. While "lifespan considerations" are briefly addressed in each chapter, this text does not significantly address pediatrics as a sub-specialty. However, new introductory chapters and increased rationale for management decision making are highlighted across the adulthood lifespan, with individual sections often overlooked in other texts such as human trafficking, genetic considerations in primary care, palliative care, and red flags featured throughout each chapter. The systematic approach to routine health screenings, immunizations, and adult primary care practice promotes reasoning skills and can facilitate classroom learning while also providing a long-term clinical desk reference.
