With more than 20 years' experience in production and technical management, Dean (deputy director, technical theater, Guildhall Sch. of Music and Drama) is more than qualified to pen this entry in Crowood's "Practical Guide" series. He provides extensive details on preproduction, safety, rehearsals, preparation, and production, including descriptions of major concerns needing attention at each stage. Dean's British background is obvious, especially in the jargon (e.g., he uses get-out for strike), but he does include some references to American and Australian theater. One major disappointment is the cramped layout, which includes floating information boxes to explain key terms. While useful, these boxes break the flow of the text in a distracting fashion. In addition, some illustrations are pages away from what they portray; others, such as sample forms, have been reduced so drastically as to be unreadable without a magnifying glass. Despite these shortcomings, this is an important resource for production personnel at all levels. Recommended for all theater collections.-Laura A.
