WILL LIKELY APPEAL TO A WIDE RANGE OF PROFESSIONALS—social workers,
psychologists, and counselors of all sorts. . . . Provides a critical
perspective of psychiatric medication in clinical practice. The book is
designed to facilitate better service to adults and children. It casts a
wide net and the catch includes a rapid assessment tool for ascertaining
the impact of medication on a client, the emerging 'illness identity'
similar to the 'sick role,' medication management, and the role of
complementary practice as a supplement to conventional treatment.

OUTSTANDING. . . . ALL SOCIAL WORKERS, COUNSELORS, AND PSYCHOLOGISTS
WORKING IN THE MENTAL HEALTH FIELD WOULD BENEFIT FROM READING THIS
OUTSTANDING BOOK. Of special note is the lead article by David Cohen. The
reader is intellectually and philosophically challenged by the author's
exploration of the meaning of medication and the ways that drug effects and
placebo effects are described by patients. Cohen also provides a
psychiatric history review that will be EXCEEDINGLY BENEFICIAL TO STUDENTS
AND MENTAL HEALTH WORKERS. Another chapter describes mind/body therapies,
dietary supplements, herbal remedies, and essential oils. This discussion
is fascinating. In easy-to-read and convenient charts, the author provides
brief lists of alternative remedies for mental health issues and explores
the role of the mental health professional in integrating alternative and
traditional health. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
