Description: This is a quick reference for nurses and nursing students who need information on the assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders. The book offers numerous colorful charts and quick-read boxes. This is the third edition. The second edition was published in 2015.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide basic, fundamental information about psychiatric illnesses and the presentation of symptoms and treatment options. The book meets these objectives.
Audience: The authors describe the audience to be nurses in any setting. The book is also useful for nursing students and meets the needs of the intended audience. The authors appear qualified based on their credentials and identified workplaces.
Features: Many aspects of this book make it fun to read and provide helpful information. The "Advice from the Experts" boxes in each chapter offer additional useful information. The character illustrations pose questions readers might also have. Two minor shortcomings: 1) "Bridging the Gap" sections present some cultural considerations but are very basic and could have provided more specific examples, and 2) there is no information on postpartum mood issues.
Assessment: This is a useful supplement for students who also have a psychiatric textbook. It is also a very good quick reference for nurses who work in other specialty areas. This new edition addresses mental health issues across the lifespan and follows the DSM-5 criteria, so an update of the second edition was necessary.
