Description: This study aid for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology written board examination has over 2,300 questions and answers with expanded and updated information from the 2005 edition.
Purpose: This is a time-efficient study guide to be used with other books in preparation for the examination.
Audience: Psychiatrists preparing to take the written board examination are the intended audience.
Features: This review divides the material into five sections. Section I sets out general information related to psychiatry, including neuropsychiatry and psychological sciences. Section II specifically reviews the diagnostic categories of different disorders included in the DSM-IV. Section III discusses various special topics including substance abuse, suicide, and cultural psychiatry. Section IV addresses psychiatric issues related to children. Section V includes a review of psychopharmacology and psychotherapy treatments. The book has minimal graphs and charts to help illustrate the learning points.
Assessment: I have used several board review books, and this one adequately covers the different areas in psychiatry. I recognized several of the items on Psychiatry Resident-in-Training Examinations (PRITE) I have taken. This book should not be used alone to prepare for boards; it should be used as an adjunct text and/or final review to rapidly cover high-yield topics. This book could benefit from some variety in its format by adding more charts, graphs, tables, mnemonics, and illustrations as the question/answer format can be monotonous. A fourth edition will be needed as more psychiatry research is completed and the DSM-V is produced.
