About the Author

RONALD J. COMER is a Professor in the Department of Psychology, Princeton University, USA. He is also a Practicing Clinical Psychologist and serves as a Consultant to the Eden Institute for Persons with Autism, USA, to hospitals, and to family practice residency programs throughout New Jersey. Elizabeth Gould is an American neuroscientist and the Dorman T. Warren Professor of Psychology at Princeton University. She was an early investigator of adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus, a research area that continues to be controversial.

Description: This second edition of an introductory psychology textbook includes new research, new pedagogical tools, new chapters on psychological disorders and their treatment, chapter-opening vignettes, guided learning objectives, practical examples and applications, helpful study tools, online self-assessments, and linked media assets.
Purpose: The authors are well aware of the need for a textbook that keeps up with the discipline of psychology and the lives of students. The authors have a number of goals for their book, but the one that stands out is helping students appreciate that all human behavior is fascinating, and to engender the same excitement in students for a course in psychology as they have for an abnormal psychology course. They succeed in creating a book that gets students thinking beyond the book and the classroom setting to appreciate the vast field of psychology.
Audience: This is a college-level textbook for students enrolled in introductory psychology. Instructors will find it easy to use, with its straightforward presentation and real-world examples. Both authors are well respected and continue to have a strong presence not just in introductory psychology, but in abnormal psychology and neuroscience.
Features: The 16 well-written and focused chapters cover the major areas of introductory psychology. There are many new features, including "Your Brain and Behavior Layouts" and "Psychology Around Us." As the book was published shortly before the release of DSM-5 in May 2013, it highlights DSM-IV-TR. The book is well rounded and clearly provides a solid base for both critical thinking and applied psychology.
Assessment: There are many introductory psychology textbooks on the market, but few that combine both a solid scientific base and real-world applicability. The authors have found that winning combination and have created a second edition better than their first.
