About the Author

Will Chapleau has more than 30 years of emergency care experience including 32 years as a paramedic, 20 years as a Trauma Nurse Specialist, and 15 years in the fire service, 6 of those years as chief of the Chicago Heights Fire Department. Currently, he is manager of the Advanced Trauma Life Support Program for the American College of Surgeons.For more than 25 years, students have had the benefit of Mr. Chapleau's educational expertise in a variety of settings - as an international faculty member for Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) since 1984, board member of the National Association of EMS Educators, The National Association of EMTs, and the Society of Trauma Nurses. He also serves on the editorial board for EMS Magazine. Mr. Chapleau has contributed to numerous textbooks and journal articles over the course of his career and is well respected by students and peers worldwide.As the Fire Chief of a busy department and the Chairperson for the Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) program since 1996, Board of Directors of the Society of Trauma Nurses, Chief Chapleau's experiences lend a perspective and credibility second to none.

Description: This interesting little pocket book, designed as a quick and easy reference for field EMTs, has multiple clear photos and some algorithms for assessment.
Purpose: Without a preface, it is difficult to define the need for or usefulness of this book. It is not comprehensive and lacks references. This might be useful as a quick review for an EMT returning from a long vacation. Overall, it seems too short for use as a complete reference.
Audience: Basic EMTs appear to be the audience. The author is an RN and EMT working for the ATLS program of the American College of Surgeons.
Features: The picture stories are clear and may serve as a very basic review without detail or other sources. The book covers some major areas, such as trauma and childbirth, with clear but limited explanations, but it is woefully short of medical emergency information. The size and plasticized pages are positive features. The best and worst thing about the book is that it covers a wide variety of topics in some detail, but leaves many other important conditions unmentioned (diabetes, pneumonia).
Assessment: It is not clear for whom the book would be useful as a reference. Other first responder books are more comprehensive and provide more detail as well as source references.
