Rarum, Vol. 1: Selected Recordings based on 0 ratings. 1 reviews.
I find this selection of Keith Jarrett's ECM output to be brilliant, but I would not recommend it as the first Jarrett CD one buys. This is no ''greatest hits'' or ''best of'' compilation. Jarrett himself, like all the artists involved in ECM's ''Rarum'' project, selected the tracks to be included. As a whole, the CD presents the range of instrumentation, rhythms, and styles that makes Jarrett both a clebrated and maddening musical artist. If you want just hear Jarrett's solo piano, or if you just want to hear the European Quartet or the Standards Trio, you may be disappointed with the CD overall. But if you have listened to Jarrett and become familiar with more or less the totality of his musical output, then you will not only be prepared for the diversity and texture of the CD, you will appreciate it immensely. All of these performances deserve to be heard and listened to repeatedly. I know that one reviewer called this CD ''uneven,'' and I agree, but I think this unevenness is a virtue. If you are willing to jettison preconceptions and perhaps suspend your sense of what sounds and rhythms that you normally consider pleasing, then I think you'll find this a CD that moves you and gives you a new appreciation for Jarrett's total musical artistry.
