The 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union transformed the common border between Russia and her traditional rivals Turkey and Iran into a series of buffer states. Scholars of the region's history and politics explore the goals and strategies of all parties as the three powers seek to gain influence in the new states while they determine and pursue their own interests. Two primary lessons from the Cold War rivalry are found to apply: client states can exploit their benefactors unmercifully, and leaders of new states should base their power on relations with their people rather than outside military aid.
