Andrew Grey, once again, doesn’t disappoint! In Rekindled Flame, you meet a motivated firefighter hero, willing to go to any length to rescue anyone in need - not knowing that his most recent rescue was an old childhood friend who had experienced great obstacles during his time in the military. Despite their time apart, the spark (pun intended), is still there… but watching them find a way to move beyond each of their own pasts to reconnect, was a heartwarming journey. One of my favorite things about this book is the depth of both characters - they are flawed, they have struggles, and working together they’re able to move forward. While never perfect, together they were able to bring each other strength and acceptance - all while rekindling their connection and building their happily ever after.

We never know when someone or something is going to have a lifelong effect on us. Sometimes it is only as a memory but other times we get a second chance to, if not change what happened, to at least change the future, and that is exactly what the theme of this book is about: second chances. Morgan and Richard were friends in school until Morgan moved away with his family, including an alcoholic father. Richie’s mother had been Morgan’s safety net, feeding him when no one else did, giving him Christmas presents when his father spend the holiday passed out drunk, so it was rough for a while after they moved. Fast forward to today and a lot has happened to both men. Morgan grew up to be a firefighter and Richie became a Marine. Unfortunately, Richie was badly injured in Afghanistan and is not confined to a wheelchair. He tries to be more than the chair but his PTSD causes him to question himself and his will to go on. He’s living with the family of a Marine buddy who died when a fire burns them out. Morgan’s rescue of the wheelchair bound man is a fresh start for the former friends because as Morgan realizes that Richie lost everything in the fire Morgan offers Richie a place to live while he considers his options for the future. When Richie accuses Morgan of doing this just because he’s nice Morgan takes that as an insult, a jab at Morgan being weak, but it allows the men to clear the air about the past and what they might want from each other now. It is at this point that the book has one of my favorite quotes of all time: “…occasionally the sound of crickets came forward when the city held its breath and remained silent for a few seconds.” Andrew Grey has a wonderful way of writing a sound, a space, and an emotion that brings the reader into the book as a participant rather than an observer, and this was one of those beautiful moments. The backstory of “Rekindled Flame” is a good one and I enjoyed reading about the men when they were boys. If not carefree they were at least just boys who took things as they came because they didn’t know any other way of being. That childhood and their families made them the men they are today. The character development is as much a part of the backstory as the current storyline is. I fell in love with these men, as I often do in romance books, but Morgan and Richie were so flesh and blood real I “knew” them on a level other than as fictional characters. The story could have been a sweet novella and ended there, with Richie and Morgan reuniting after all these years, falling in love, and growing old together. But there is a sinister twist to the story, something that makes the fire more than an unfortunate accident. Someone is after one of the men and things are going to end badly if this mystery is not solved. This is a very exciting twist to a sweet romance. Will the villain be caught and motives examined? Will it change what Richie and Morgan have begun to build between them? Read to find out.
