Description: This is an overview of psychiatry from an international perspective covering psychodynamic, social, biological, aspects of etiology, symptom description and treatment from both a present day and historical perspective.
Purpose: The purpose is to give an overview of the field of psychiatry and mental health from the perspective of a single experienced senior psychiatrist. This approach gives a more realistic perspective of mental health in general. The author covers most aspects broadly of psychiatry, mental illness, and mental health delivery. He also covers more philosophical aspects of "evidence" in psychiatry and resident training.
Audience: The book is written in such a fashion that lay persons could understand and learn from it. In this way the book could be helpful for many types of mental health providers and students of psychology and social work. The author appears to intend this book for other psychiatrists and is well versed in psychiatry in Europe, but from an international viewpoint as well.
Features: The author covers mental health from a historical, theoretical, and research based integrated view, starting from the delivery system and including etiology, diagnosis, treatment, psychotherapy, integrating medical model and psychodynamic model, stress of current practice to the practitioner, and resident training. The highlights of the book are the personal viewpoint and opinions from a senior psychiatrist who has seen the rapid change in psychiatry and mental health treatment in his career. The book reads at times like a historical perspective and argues that apparently disparate topics like psychoanalysis and biological psychiatry should be considered and integrated by a modern psychiatrist. The chapters covering whether mental health is founded on true scientific conceptions and the burn out syndrome stand out as thought provoking and unique.
Assessment: As a senior resident in combined internal medicine and psychiatry, I found this book helpful in getting a broad and inclusive view of psychiatry. The author is successful in uniting disparate aspects of mental health in a cohesive whole. This book would serve well in a history of psychiatry course or a course on current thoughts on mental health. It also would be helpful for American psychiatrists who have an interest in international or Western European perspectives on mental health. It is not a practical treatment book, but it is significant nonetheless.
