Description: This is an excellent primer for medical students on obstetrics/gynecology rotations.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide senior medical students a basic understanding of a wide variety of obstetrics and gynecology problems. The book uses a short, case-based format.
Audience: It is geared for third and fourth year students doing an obstetrics/gynecology rotation. Those going into an obstetrics/gynecology residency would benefit the most. The authors are active clinicians at very busy U.S. centers.
Features: The book is broadly divided into three sections: obstetrics, gynecology, and ambulatory. Although there is a table of contents, it's of limited value as it is just a list of clinical presentations as opposed to actual topics. Readers would be better served by beginning at page 1 and continuing to the end. For example, a reader wishing to know something about postpartum fever would have to scan through the entire table of contents to find "27 Year Old Postpartum Patient." Within each section, cases are presented and questions are posed to help readers formulate a differential diagnosis and management plan. The cases include brief clinical summaries followed by questions to reinforce concepts. All of the scenarios I read were accurate. References direct readers to more comprehensive summaries.
Assessment: This is an excellent guide for medical students, but probably not sufficient for residents or higher. The format promotes the development of differential diagnoses and the material sticks well. The table of contents makes directed learning difficult, but this is a small quibble, and pictures would enhance the presentation. Otherwise, this is a very good book.
