Rose
Answering the frantic knocking on the church door, Sister Mary Nichols finds a disheveled, dirty young girl with a scared look on her face standing at the threshold dressed in tattered rags and barefooted. While the Catholic Church is a haven to all, there was something special about this waif that reached out to the young nun for aid. Little did Sister Mary realize that when she opened wide the door and beckoned the girl, who seemed no older than ten, to enter, the Sister was inviting in evil as well.
Still, any misgivings she may have experienced, there was an instant bond between the nun and the nameless newcomer that could not be explained, a bond that reached beyond the present into the far distant past, a bond that called Sister Mary to action as dead bodies began to pile up and bloody signals to appear. A bond that could lead to the death of the Catholic nun and the homeless girl she called....Rose.

About the Author

From the author

The story you just read does not exist in any real place. The unnamed city is not London, New York or New Orleans, though it contains aspects of all of those places. Nor does it exist in any particular time, neither Edwardian nor Victorian, but a strange combination of both. The children's accents aren't Cockney or Brooklyn or Creole, and yet they are.
No, Rose sits firmly in the Neverwhen, the retrofuturistic 19th century of authors such as Jules Verne, Tim Powers, James Blaylock and K.W Jeter. This is a world that I have always wanted to work in, and though challenging, it was also quite rewarding.
Though it is a work of fiction, the novel had many real world inspirations. The Ripper murders, of course, as well as the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire. For factual information, I relied heavily on The Victorian Web (www.victorianweb.org),which is a great jumping off point for anyone interested in the time period.
As usual, music was a vital spark to keep the fires of this novel lit. I'd like to thank Rasputina, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Dead Can Dance as well as the works of Stephen Sondheim and The Sherman Brothers.
Thank you for reading.
