Overview

Brock and Gabby, a young couple living in the New Orleans, Louisiana’s urban housing development, also known as the projects, find themselves in a bind when Brock is charged with a murder he didn’t commit. Sticking to the code of the streets by not snitching on the actual killer and unable to afford a lawyer, the two now face even tougher obstacles as Brock is without bond and facing thirty years to life. Backs against the wall, the two are forced to make sacrifices that ultimately pay off courtesy of their forfeitures.

The lives of a committed couple change when the boyfriend is wrongly accused of murder in Williams’ debut novel.

White New Orleans native Brock Peterson and his Puerto Rican girlfriend, Gabrielle Sanchez, faced hardships early in their lives. Brock’s parents died when he was young, forcing him to drop out of school and get a job as a sanitation worker. Gabrielle’s family lost their home due to her mother’s gambling and drug abuse. She and Brock became a couple after her parents separated and abandoned her and her sister, Isabelle. During a basketball pickup game, a man is shot, and Brock is found at the scene of the crime. Although Brock knows the killer’s identity, he knows he can’t reveal it to authorities: “He knew that the streets lived by a code, and he was going to honor it even if it meant sacrificing his life.” While incarcerated, he’s haunted by nightmares. Meanwhile, Gabrielle has to make sacrifices of her own and find a way to support her beloved behind bars, even if it means taking drastic measures. Williams presents a novel about the lengths that two people will go to survive. Brock and Gabrielle are shown to be enamored with each other, but both lack a certain amount of maturity; he, in particular, is shown to have difficulty understanding that Gabrielle has a busier life than she led before, when she was a stay-at-home girlfriend, since she now has to provide for herself. Most of the characters come from similar backgrounds, but more diversity in their speech might feel more realistic; as it is, the novel’s constant colloquialisms can feel jarring. The novel is easy to follow, however, and readers will root for Brock and Gabrielle despite their stubbornness and unorthodox methods of looking out for each other. Some will particularly sympathize with Gabrielle’s willingness to do anything for the love of her life.

Despite an overuse of slang, this is a readable novel about people dealing with situations in which the odds are stacked against them.
