River Otter

Diet: Fish, other aquatic species such as crayfish

Scat: Blunt-ended tubes, usually of fish bones, scales (black) or crustacean shells (reddish)

Size: D 2–2.5 cm; L 7.6–15.2 cm

Location: In latrines next to water or (winter) on ice. River otter only species in Weasel Family to be social throughout year; family members live together, feed together, drop scat in communal latrine. GISS: A huge mess, with many scats a few feet or a short distance apart.

Hunting: Excellent swimmer, streamlined for water movement; can remain in water for up to eight minutes

Caption 1: Shiny fish scales may reflect light. Scats quickly disintegrate into amorphous pile.

Caption 2: Crayfish shells from disintegrated section of otter scat. Shell pieces larger than those of raccoon (with cheek teeth to crunch and crush) or gull (with gizzard to grind).
