- Piano Sonata No. 13 in A major, D. 664 (Op. 120)
- Piano Sonata No. 21 in B flat major, D. 960
Nine years after his 2008 Harmonia Mundi album of Schubert's "Impromptus," Javier Perianes returns to this composer for his 2017 CD of the "Piano Sonata in B flat major, D. 960," and the "Piano Sonata in A major, D. 664." The style of playing here is decidedly Romantic, and Perianes gives his Schubert plenty of rubato and dynamic flexibility to emphasize the lyrical aspects of the music over its driving motor rhythms or arresting dramatic contrasts. Perianes' robust tone and high energy also contribute to the Romantic impression, and his approach will appeal to traditionalists who prefer their Schubert interpretations to be closer to Schumann in feeling and texture. The reproduction is clean and full in the recording of "D. 960," but sounds of breathing are rather pronounced in the performance of "D. 664" and more than a little distracting in the quiet Andante.
