At first, I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into in deciding to read this book. Because admittedly I do tend to lean towards more traditional modern romance novels. But I was intrigued by the description and the writing sample and the way that I felt an almost immediate connection to not only the interesting characters, but with the way that Robert Wheeler was writing them, ((and that intro had my curiosity piqued)) and I found myself just wanting to read more… and more… and more… and I couldn’t believe it when I realized I was totally hooked, and even totally enjoyed the exciting paranormal/fantasy and action scenes! But seriously, I felt sucked into another world(s) just by experiencing the lives of these incredible characters, (angel and human, gods, vamps, you name it!) who are so true to life and authentic-feeling, yet unlike any I’ve met before. Like that the plot felt like it had a deeper meaning that we could all relate to on some level, and it was anything but predictable. Even though there are familiar elements and literary tropes, Wheeler does a great job of putting his own spin on the traditional, yet stays true to the spirit we all know and love. I liked how descriptive and literary this book read, but at times I did think it suffered from a little too much ‘purple prose’ and could use better proofing. Nothing fatal though, and was still an unexpectedly impressive experience. This book certainly has its dark moments, and more complex character conflicts that I expected. Never look at angels the same way again! I’m really glad I took a chance on this one… I’ll happily read more from Mr. Wheeler when the next books are published. Suitable for mature teens and older.

"Scions of Azazyel” by Robert Wheeler was a captivating novel and very impressive for a debut. There is strong, vivid writing, and the characters are all fascinating, flawed, and going through their own personal drama (to say the least). Such great flow and these characters were really something else… and everything just ‘believable’ for lack of a better word – even though some parts are dark and it is definitely ‘fantastical’. Dialogue, interactions, scenes, descriptions…The pictures were a nice touch, but the editing needs improvement (punctuation, repetition, tense shifts). The beginning seemed a bit slow and there are definitely some ‘familiar topes here, but it develops its own personality and identity and the pace quickly picks up and then it is one exciting thing after another. Not perfect. But all in all, a very good read that I’d recommend even to those who don’t usually read this genre …try it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised! It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger, but the author says that the next book is on its way and I hope it’s not too long off! Thought the info at the end was really interesting too. Recommend to fans of myth/angels/action/fantasy
