Description: This is the fourth edition of a multiauthored book describing anatomic considerations and performance of operative procedures.
Purpose: This is a description of procedures structured around the Surgical Council on Resident Education (SCORE) essential procedure list.
Audience: Students and surgeons at all degrees of sophistication are an appropriate audience for this work emanating in large part from anatomists and surgeons at the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
Features: The book is organized by body region, beginning with the head and neck and proceeding through the chest and abdominal region to the lower extremity. Endoscopic procedures, if relevant, are described for each body region followed, in sequence, by dissection of skin and immediate subcutaneous tissues, then deeper structures. Some procedures are presented only in an online supplement. The abdominal region gets the greatest emphasis with ample description of approaches to hernia repair and esophageal, gastric, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic procedures. Essential vascular techniques are also described for each body region. Each chapter begins with the SCORE assessment of the procedure, followed by procedural steps, anatomic complications, and important structures. Chapters are illustrated with a variety of color photographs, black-and-white line drawings, and color drawings. Radiographs and photographs do not always reproduce with great clarity. References feature primary literature and date to within one to two years of publication. The table of contents groups chapters according to body region and lists authorship while a detailed subject index allows the reader to identify figures and tables along with reference to online materials.
Assessment: This edition has been significantly expanded and the correspondence to the SCORE curriculum is obvious. Some of the illustrations could be improved and details of anatomy organized to emphasize clinical impact.
