Overview

With a backstory that's longer than the runtime itself, Seven Inches of Satanic Panic is a 2019 Ghost single that bought the band some time between their global breakthroughs, Prequelle and Impera. As the tale goes, these songs were written and recorded in 1969 by an early incarnation of the group that was fronted by Papa Emeritus Nihil. This is the remastered version. Die-hard fans should appreciate that extra lore, but for the rest of the world, it's simply bonus information. The naughty A-side "Kiss the Go-Goat" is a rollicking, psychedelic rock gem about getting it on with the Devil; meanwhile, B-side "Mary on a Cross" ended up being the big, unexpected hit. The melodic, oddly beautiful power ballad is as religiously provocative as Ghost can get, providing plenty of witty double meanings depending on the listener's point of view. Though released in 2019, the song found new life three years later in 2022 on social media, garnering Ghost their first placement on the Billboard Hot 100 and storming charts around the world. It was also certified platinum in the U.S. For those reasons, this is one of the most significant moments in the band's career trajectory and a gem in their catalog. ~ Neil Z. Yeung
