Overview

Rose Trewin is on the run. Pursued by memories of her father, she runs from city to city, seeking normalcy. But Rose can’t escape her past, or the magic running through her veins, the magic that allows her to slip through the shadows unnoticed. The magic her father once used to mold her into a mercenary sent to destroy his enemies.

Now her magic is growing and changing, becoming something new and untamable. Rose is unable to rest. Wolves wrapped in fog follow her relentlessly along the countryside. Desperate, she uses her magic to escape, but the shadows are pushing her towards the center of a conspiracy.

Now, her country teeters on the brink of a civil war as a Lord Governor gathers power against the king. An enemy, with magic similar to her own, emerges in the chaos of political intrigue.

Faced with a country at war and a king brought to his knees, Rose must accept who she is and harness her powers in order to save her country and herself.

Reviewed by K.C. Finn for Readers' Favorite Shadow’s Voice is a dark and exciting work of fantasy fiction penned by author Natalie Johanson. The central plot follows the young Rose Trewin, a drifter who has much more to her than first meets the eye. Rose has been imbued with deadly magical powers, allowing her to merge with shadows, and now those powers are building into something even more terrifying. As Rose tries to escape those who gave her such powers in the first place, her homeland verges on a devastating civil war. Rose is one of the few people who could actually help to bring peace against an enemy with magic like her own, and so she must face her true self to help those people she cares for. Author Natalie Johanson writes a cracking read right from the first few pages that immerse readers into the plot right away. Rose Trewin is a character that readers can relate to and be intrigued by at once, journeying with her as different obstacles force her to confront and discover the limits of her own power. The enemies she faces seek the usual power, greed, and total control, and the fact that Rose is far from a pure, selfless hero makes it interesting to see her own motivations coming through as she finds ways to combat forces greater than herself. Overall, Shadow’s Voice is an exciting and enjoyable fantasy read that is sure to please fans of the genre who are seeking unlikely heroes, exciting magical peril and plenty of drama.

Reviewed by A. L. Peevey for Readers' Favorite Shadow's Voice by Natalie Johanson is the story of Rose Trewin, a young woman running from her complicated and perilous past. She has secrets, one of which is her possession of a magical skill: she can move through shadows unseen. Always wandering and not staying long in any one place, she has taken up residence in a small, nondescript town far from anywhere else, working in a shop at a boring job. One day Rose meets a curious stranger, Nico, but manages to evade him only to encounter Gavin, someone from her past who is definitely not a friend. She decides to take matters into her hands. Will Rose need to use her shadow magic to escape Gavin and thwart his unknown intentions for her, and has she really seen the last of Nico, the curious stranger? In Shadow's Voice by Natalie Johanson, we discover some characters and situations familiar to and expected by most fans of fantasy and, indeed, are what we look forward to in a book like this. There is also conflict between major forces in the book. But, Rose’s magic is a unique take on the run-of-the-mill powers we usually see in fantasy stories. There is something sinister about her power, and while it is useful, meaning Rose certainly is not helpless, its use takes an emotional and physical toll on her. This fact makes her more human and, therefore, more believable. Flawed and tortured characters hold our interest and keep us reading, and the author has promised more books about Rose.

Rose is on the run. She is afraid that her father will find her and use her magic again. But her travels lead her into a man then the task of giving his message to the king. After delivering the message the king offers her a job as a spy. Rose decides to take the job even though her magic is becoming more powerful. Maybe this will be what she needs. This is a great first book from Natalie Johsanson. You have an amazing world and a kick butt lead character. Rose doesn’t take grief from anyone which is at odds with her running from her past. As you learn about her past you do come to care for her and hope that her finds her place in the world. This world was created perfectly. No info dumps and a hint at a romance that progresses very slowly. It was very easy to get into this story and the ending wrapped everything up neatly. There is an opening for a sequel and I really hope that there is more to come from this world. I recommend checking out Shadow’s Voice if you like YA fantasy stories. I can’t wait to read more from Natalie Johanson. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Shadow’s Voice by Natalie Johanson is an incredible story. Is our protagonist actually a villain or merely made that way by life’s cruel circumstances? Who is the mastermind pulling all these people together and exactly what is he seeking? The mysteries and drama will keep you turning the pages. The cruelty life deals to Rose tugs at your heartstrings. Yet, resilient souls find a way to infuse humor into the toughest situations. Every character is fully developed and the settings from the castle to the Shadowlands are vividly displayed through the author's words. It’s amazing this is her debut novel. It is written like a seasoned professional. I can not wait to read the next book in this series. Pick up a copy of Shadow’s Voice today. It is a winner!

Shadow's Voice is a great read for anyone who loves a good fantasy. It's a book full of magic and mystery that keeps readers engaged. When Rose Ula feels obligated to fulfill a dying man's quest to warn his king of a murder plot, she is forced on an adventure that she never meant to get involved with. The best thing about the book is the writer's great cast of characters, most intriguing of which is Rose herself. She is not a regular heroine - she can drink all the boys under the table, can hold her own in a fight, and doesn't have time for rules of civility when dealing with nobility. Rose is constantly seeking atonement for the things she's done and but also doesn't believe that she deserves redemption. While her past remains a bit of a mystery to readers, the author hints that she's done some pretty terrible things to survive. While the author doesn't delve much into what happened in Rose's past, the ending of this book suggested that a second novel may follow that will explain more. Rose is funny and sarcastic and her snarky comments are some of the best dialogue in the book. The author has managed to create a fantastic world that readers will get lost in. From page one, you will feel as if have joined Rose on every step of her journey. The writing style is full of beautiful prose and a fast moving pace that will make you exciting to know more about the characters, the magic, and the history of new world that has been created within the books pages. With such a wonderful first novel, readers have a lot to anticipate from the imagination of Natalie Johanson. Readers will hopefully soon be able to continue with Rose on more of her journey in a sequel.

Reviewed by Romuald Dzemo for Readers' Favorite Shadow's Voice by Natalie Johanson is a beautiful read for fantasy lovers. Roselyn Ula has had a very rough past and she thinks running away from it is the only form of redemption left for her. But one never runs away from one’s self. Destiny puts her on the path of a messenger who beckons her to complete his mission for the King. Now, she must travel to the castle to save the king from an enemy who will stop at nothing to see him overthrown. Is Rose ready to open her soul, connect with her shadow magic, and face the challenges that await her? Shadow's Voice is a tale of magic, but most importantly, it’s a story of redemption won through heroism and unrelenting courage. Natalie Johanson has an arresting writing gift and her prose will surely seduce lovers of beautiful words. I loved the descriptive style and the images the writing conjures up, making readers see things very clearly. The narrative voice comes across with strength and unwavering conviction. The plot is well imagined and executed with a lot of style; it moves very fast, with enough to make the reader curious about what happens next. I loved the characters. Yes, they are compelling and fully fledged. Rose is one that readers will root for. She comes flawed with her past and torn between seeking redemption and offering her services for the welfare of her people. The conflict that rages within her is the catalyst that propels the story forward. Shadow's Voice is an impassioned page-turner that fantasy fans can’t put down. Its satisfactory ending could be the promise of another beautiful story in the making.

Shadow’s Voice is a fantasy story about Rose Ula, a young lass who is on the run from her past and anyone who might know her. I like a story that starts off getting straight into the action and nitty-gritty and Shadow’s Voice is no exception. A man with a message for the king asks Rose to complete his mission and Rose gets plunged into a dangerous journey to fulfil her promise. Rose is a likeable character, even though she does her best to keep the rest of the world at arms-length. I liked the way that Natalie builds Rose’s relationships with the supporting cast. It kept the story moving along at a good pace, while still leaving Rose’s past shadowed and uncertain. From the start it is clear that Rose has some shadowy talents and has experienced a troubled upbringing, but Shadow’s Voice is a good story of an unlikely heroine finding her way in the world that Natalie has created. The enigmatic magic that Rose seems eager to be rid of is excellently described and well fleshed-out. There’s a little bit of Cinderella about Rose, but a dark and mysterious Cinderella. Having said that, there’s plenty of action and intrigue, humour and adventure that make the book a good read. I enjoyed reading about Rose’s adventures and I hope she has many more…!
