One fellow I had mentored convinced me to see him for a session late at night, even though I warned him I am not too alert after 9:00 p.m. I was concerned because when I had seen him before it was always earlier in the day. During those visits, I felt I had made perceptive comments, that I had done helpful things for him. When this nighttime visit finally happened, I was so tired I was practically mute — even the usual Rogerian "ahaa's" seemed to elude me. Finally, after about an hour when he finished sharing what was on his mind, we finished our herbal tea and I walked him to the door. Just as he was walking out he offered me a final "thank you" and almost as an afterthought added: "You know I think this was the most profitable time I ever spent with you." — From Chapter 3, Telling One's Story

What People are Saying About This

Walter J. Burghart

From Walter J. Burghart, S.J., Woodstock Theological Center

Sharing Wisdom is not only a remarkably concise, insightful, down-to-earth manual for mentors from a richly experienced expert. It is the finest detailed handbook I know for anyone who wants to know how to deal humanly with all manner of people, a splendid commentary on the gospel injunction to love others in all sorts of circumstances while growing personally in the doing thereof. Nothing quite like it.

Patrick Ellis

From Patrick Ellis, FSC, Former President of Catholic University of America

"One of the strongest features of Sharing Wisdom is the insistence that the mentor must nourish his or her own spirit constantly and amply, if he is to be of any use to others over the long haul. Dr. Wicks is highly ecumenical on this topic, cognizant of world cultures and their resources, and very practical.

Joseph M. Hoeffel

From Congressman Joseph M. Hoeffel of the U.S. House of Representatives

Sharing Wisdom is a commonsense approach to mentoring that shows us all the benefits of reaching out to help someonw else.
