"Transformative ... If Tobia aspires to the ranks of comic memoirists like David Sedaris and Mindy Kaling, Sissy succeeds." —The New York Times Book Review

A heart-wrenching, eye-opening, and giggle-inducing memoir about what it's like to grow up not sure if you're (a) a boy, (b) a girl, (c) something in between, or (d) all of the above.

"A beautiful book . . . honest and funny."—Trevor Noah, The Daily Show
"Sensational."—Tyler Oakley
"Jacob Tobia is a force." —Good Morning America
"A trans Nora Ephron . . . both honest and didactic." —OUT Magazine
"A rallying cry for anyone who's ever felt like they don't belong." —Woman's Day

As a young child in North Carolina, Jacob Tobia wasn't the wrong gender, they just had too much of the stuff. Barbies? Yes. Playing with bugs? Absolutely. Getting muddy? Please. Princess dresses? You betcha. Jacob wanted it all, but because they were "a boy," they were told they could only have the masculine half. Acting feminine labelled them "a sissy" and brought social isolation.

It took Jacob years to discover that being "a sissy" isn't something to be ashamed of. It's a source of pride. Following Jacob through bullying and beauty contests, from Duke University to the United Nations to the podiums of the Methodist church—not to mention the parlors of the White House—this unforgettable memoir contains multitudes. A deeply personal story of trauma and healing, a powerful reflection on gender and self-acceptance, and a hilarious guidebook for wearing tacky clip-on earrings in today's world, Sissy guarantees you'll never think about gender—both other people's and your own—the same way again.

Giving a whole new perspective to gender identity, sexuality, and relationships, Jacob Tobia gives an excellent personal and deep view into their life surrounded by misconceptions and judgement on terms of gender. I thought I was very aware and open to the idea of gender being non-conforming , but Tobia’s thoughts and experiences educated me on so many more things about gender than I could’ve ever known. This memoir will make you laugh, cry, and smile and will change your perspective on the idea of gender in today’s world as Tobia takes you through their journey into their most important moments in life that drove them to come to terms with sexuality, gender, and identity.

Sissy offers an honest, comic, and unapologetic take on Jacob Tobia's trans experience. Jacob makes clear their conscious intention to share a trans narrative that doesn’t necessarily fit the structure that cisgender people may have grown comfortable with. Jacob uses a distinct voice and strong prose to guide readers through their gradual acceptance and eventual whole-hearted embrace of their gender-nonconformity. Definitely worth reading for everyone!

As a fellow young person and current college student, this memoir hit me really hard. I identify as a woman of color and many of the struggles that Jacob has experienced in creating and owning a space for themself, nurturing an identity that speaks unapologetically to themself, and making the most of their undergraduate career are ones that resonate deeply with me. Their unabashed, snarky tone has made this memoir an enjoyable read that I finished within one sitting. Finishing the book, I left it inspired and reflective on the arbitrary guidelines and values imposed on not only gender, but also race and sexuality. I've already recommended this to my friends; it's definitely a book that young people like me should pick up.

Jacob has a unique, personable voice that makes this a quick read. They challenge the idea that any single narrative can capture the trans experience and expanded my understanding of what it means to be transgender. The tone is generally humorous however Jacob takes time to seriously address the trauma they experienced as a result of being forced into the gender binary. I highly recommend this memoir because it not only addresses important issues, it also is a fun read.
