Six Wakes is a science-fiction and mystery book written by Mur Lafferty in 2017. The book is told from a third-person omniscient point of view, and tells the story of the Dormire crew. A space shift, contain thousands of clones including the crew, traveling to an unknown planet within the Tau Ceti star system, entitled Artemis. However, something horrible has occurred. All of the crew has been murdered, by someone or something. Now with their new clone bodies, Maria the cook, engineer Paul Seurat, navigator Akihiro Sato, Doctor Joanna Glass, security chief Wolfgang, and Captain Katrina de la Cruz must now solve their own murder and bring the killer to justice. However, there has only ever been six of them on board, meaning the list of suspects also include themselves. The book is very well paced, however, the beginning does start to slow down after the first chapter. Yet, other than that the pacing was near perfect and never seemed to drag on or unwelcome its stay. The books main antagonist stems from who killed the Dormire crew, as many of the ships problem are recognized or started from the uncertainty of who the killer is. The book is mainly told from the point of view of fellow Dormire cook Maria. As the most background and majority of the events are of Maria’s experience. My favorite character defiantly has to go to IAN, an IA of the Dormire ship, who accomplices the crew. He is very sarcastic and witty especially for a robot, and is seen as the comedy relief of the ship’s crew. I really found no problems within the novel and majority of the time wished it had lasted even longer. Everything was really well done, and none of the characters or scenes irritated me to the point where I would completely erase them from the novel, if I were the author. I really enjoyed the novel, and often wished it had dragged on even longer from what it actually did. In a nutshell I would recommend Six Wakes to anyone who is a fan of murder-mysteries or science-fiction books, in a heartbeat.

A closed door murder mystery set in space but none of the people involved have any memory of the events because they are newly awakened clones. I loved the two Mur Lafferty's previous books that I read Shambling Guide to New York City and Ghost Train to New Orleans. Both were urban fantasy novels involving werewolves, zombies, and other paranormal creatures. This book is quite different. This is true science fiction. However, it still involves quite a bit of Lafferty's signature humor. It begins with a group of clones waking up in what looks like a murder scene. Their previous bodies are floating with blood, vomit, and various other things in the room. From there we see the current happenings as well as the lives of the 6 crew members that got them to this point except for their lives on the ship. The characters are extremely well written. Their motivations make sense in context. The settings feel realistic. The pacing is perfect. Overall, I absolutely loved this book
