Includes Study Guide

Is Jud Blake a murderous villain or a new kind of hero? Is Blake a "godless scientist" or a romantic old fool who falls in love with a woman half his age?

"By the time you read this I might be dead," begins Dr. Jud Blake, a devoted husband and father. He recounts his intense love for his wife and young son from his North Carolina prison cell. Animal rights terrorism, revenge, and mass violence in America provide the backdrop for this story about a scientist who struggles frantically to use gene therapy to save his son and prevent the spread of violence in America—before it's too late.

After taking revenge on an animal rights terrorist, Jud goes to prison. He soon realizes that gene therapy using a new tool called CRISPR might allow him to reduce violent behavior and prevent mass murder. It also might allow him to alter his own genome and live a longer and healthier life. Although malevolent terrorists try desperately to thwart Jud and his team, he forges ahead with his efforts to save the future of America.

In the tradition of Don Quixote, Jud Blake—hate him or love him—will win your heart and soul as he stumbles, falls, and always stretches for the stars.
