Overview

Sola, Olga Tanon's solo debut album, released by WEA Latina in 1992, exhibits none of the pop-crossover tendencies of her later work, emphasizing her merengue roots in explicit fashion. Granted, Sola doesn't include any major hits and indeed pales in comparison to what would follow in the years to come: namely, Mujer de Fuego (1993), Siente el Amor... (1994), and Llevame Contigo (1997) -- all great albums that likewise emphasize merengue and predate her descent into Latin pop, beginning with Te Acordaras de Mi (1998). Still, Sola isn't a bad album. In fact, relative to other merengue albums of its time, it's quite good. However, it seems tepid relative to the heights Tanon would soon reach. One song worth nothing is "Me Cambio por Ella," a great song written by Raldy Vazquez, who would pen several hits for Tanon on subsequent albums. ~ Jason Birchmeier
