A group of unlikely heroes, one world lost to the lust for greed and power, and one spaceship with the personality of your best friend, worst enemy, and even your mom! Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is more than action-packed young adult science fiction, it is full on fantasy with some of the greatest elements all gathered together in a tale that is larger than life and full of imagination and brilliance! Imagine being one of the last to survive your world, only making it off because your late grandfather was a brilliant, yet secretive scientist who had created a sentient spaceship who knows you better than you know yourself. Rynah’s heart has been deceived; her new fiancé was only after a gem, long thought to be a mythological tale, that holds the power of the universe in its facets. Now it is both survival and payback time and Rynah and Solaris are just the ones to do the job! At all costs they must rally team together to save the galaxy from ultimate ruin and dictatorship. Reaching across time and space, Solaris will bring Rynah her “army” and the so the quest begins… Rynah has some rough edges, and she must learn to celebrate the differences her team brings to the table, for only together do they stand a chance against a seasoned army. Each with their own strong point, each willing to fight for honor, each determined to finish the job and be returned to their own time and place. Follow their journey, their battles, their pain and their victories as they live each day on the edge with only Solaris to guide them. Janet McNulty tells the kind of fantasy that allows her readers to plunge right in, and join the fray while putting their won slant on the story, almost as interactive as Solaris! No spoon feeding here, just a chance to unleash your own inner hero and fight on the side of good. Ms. McNulty never lets up on the drama, the pace, the atmosphere of desperation and determination, not even for one second. Truly a battle for survival against evil as one young woman finally understands her past and appreciates all that was done to keep her safe by the grandfather she turned her back on. Unique characters, fierce battles, emergencies, and a coming together between these diverse players highlight this adventure as this group learns the value of each member and their place on the team. I was lost in the tale, part of the action and found myself wanting to meet Solaris, myself, because she is the unique twist in this adventure! You want heroics, tension and out of this world action? It's all here!
When a data crystal that makes the planet of laynr habitabe is stolen, by its guards new fiance, it will take a surprising crew to get it back. A ship with a mind of its own becomes the guide for the crystals guard, Rynah, to try and rescue what is left of her home world. But it becomes much less simple when following old myths and legends there is actually six crystals that when united become a dangerous weapon. In a race against those determined to destroy everything, Rynah and her four companions, humans from different points in earths history, must try and collect the crystals before its too late. An excellent book. It started rather choppy and for the beginning of the book I didnt really think I would like it. However, after the intial choppiness for the introductory chapters I found myself much more intrigued. I do feel that some of the characters were lacking depth, but it can be expected that in the other books of the series their backgrounds may come more into play adding more to their development. My biggest complaint about the book is that it has a sequel so I dont get to know how the story ends yet. Definitely will be buying the others.
Rynah has barely escaped with her life, as her planet’s magnetic force spins out of alignment. Her estranged grandfather’s ship, Solaris, is her only chance to escape. As it turns out her crazy grandfather was right about the prophecies and those old stones, and she must decipher the cryptic legends about them to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands. Fortunately, Solaris is far more helpful there than she ever imagined. Solaris Seethes is the first book in a series that follows Rynah and her band of misfits across the galaxy in a ship with a personality all her own as she seeks to right wrongs and avenge her people. Not the most original sci-fi storyline, but still a good one. The plot and the characters are interesting, and the depth of the characters is well thought out, but the writing/editing really needs some work. There are really random parenthetical phrases throughout where it should be just basic description rather than the aside indicated by the parentheses, and somewhat awkward transitions, which is in stark contrast to the relatively believable dialogue and quickly moving plot. Still I look forward to the rest of the series and hope Rynah finds her redemption.
A crystal has been stolen, causing a world to collapse, killing its inhabitants. But Rynah survived by piloting away on Solaris, an antiquated spaceship. If the crystal is combined with the other five scattered crystals, they will become one very destructive weapon. Solaris has waited a long time for her part in saving the universe. But first, she must gather four others from the 13th sector to help in the quest of finding the crystals before the evil one does. I liked the diversity of characters that were thrown together in the story. It made for a fascinating adventure. A spaceship with attitude was also an interesting facet. Rynah’s childish character though was annoying, but I could tell that her experiences had matured her by the ending. Of course, the way the story ends leaves me anxious for the next book in the saga.
