Something Like Summer by Jay Bell

Love, like everything in the universe, cannot be destroyed. But over time it can change.

The hot Texas nights were lonely for Ben before his heart began beating to the rhythm of two words; Tim Wyman. By all appearances, Tim had the perfect body and ideal life, but when a not-so-accidental collision brings them together, Ben discovers that the truth is rarely so simple. If winning Tim's heart was an impossible quest, keeping it would prove even harder as family, society, and emotion threaten to tear them apart.

Something Like Summer is a love story spanning a decade and beyond as two boys discover what it means to be friends, lovers, and sometimes even enemies.

About the Author

Jay Bell led a quiet life in Kansas until the day he met a handsome foreign exchange student named Andreas who swept him off his feet and carried him all the way to Germany. Much to their delight, marriage awaited them when they got there. While living so distant from friends and family, Jay began writing in an effort to reconcile the mixture of devotion and alienation he felt. This resulted in a Lambda Literary Award and a film option for his best-selling novel Something Like Summer. Jay and Andreas have since relocated to Chicago where their adventures continue, as do those of the characters in their emotionally driven Something Like... series. Jay pens the stories and Andreas provides the cover art, making them books about love, forged by love.

This was he first book i've read by Jay Bell and boy was I impressed. This isnt just a story, its a journey that Bell expertly carries us on, with Highs and lows, Sorrow and Euphoria with a good mix of humour thrown in to boot. The characters have great depth, and you cant help but feel part of the story. I read this book in 2 sittings, and at an impressive 737 pages, this was a great indication of how you get drawn into the story and dont want to put it down. The pacing of the story is what keeps you turning the pages. Dont be put off by the low price of this book, it in no way reflects the content. Ive read books 3 times the price that dont even come close.

I don't recommend this book to someone who is looking for a quick and easy read to help them escape from daily life. This is Literature in every since of the word. While you do escape to another world, it's an emotional ride that often has you screaming at the character to do something else... If I had to compare it to another auther in any way so that you could pick up the depth of this book, I'd say Nicholas Sparks though this auther doesn't try to make human emotions and relationships simple. Though I love Nicholas Sparks, I can't help but find the realness of Jay Bell refreshing if not heartbreaking in it's trueth... I cried and beat my pillow at the sufferings of my characters. I laughed and cheered as they over came... The book became a person to me and those of you who truely read because they love it will understand this. Just as people touch our lives, something we read can irrevocably change us and make us strive for something we never even knew we wanted to until shown.

I was not really interesting in gay romance novels, however having come across and reading the reviews I decided to give it a shot, and I am glad I did. The main concern that I was having when I first stared reading it, was it was just going to be a erotic sex book, but It wasn't. It truly was a love story, with a little ups, and a lot of down. By the end I was crying like a baby, by sadness and happiness. This has been the first book, In a LONG time, that had me in tears. And when the book ended, I was shocked that I read the whole book in two days. READ IT!!!!! I am telling you!!!!

I flew through the 737 pages... I am usually a very slow reader, but I couldn't put this book down.

4.5 stars. Great story. Had me hooked from the very begining. Way worth the money too. It's definitely one of my favorite published gay novels. Only downside: I felt as if the end was rushed and much prefered reading them as teens, but the last part was more of preference. Overall: you shouldn't miss this; way worth it, trust me.

Excellent, for what it is. I am not big on romance stories, but this one waa good. I like that it presents gay relationships as based on emotion instead of the usual vein of story telling that presents the lifestyle as purely sexual.

This book was simply amazing. The writer made me laugh and cry. The writer had a wonderful way with words. I could see everything written clearly in my mind. This was simply an amazing book I encourage fully that we all read this masterpiece. Thank you Jay Bell for writing such a wonderful book. It made me see views i would have never seen before. Truly inspiring.

Honest, believable and unforced, credible twists of the story line. The characters are well-developed and more than likable. Mr. Bell eschews the over-abundance of eroticism that most romance writers adopt for a more invigorating and inviting brand of storytelling. I recommend this novel highly.

This book just too good. I was enchanted with the young love and moved by the development of the characters. There were times I yelled at the characters haha. I often forgot that I was reading and just got swept away by the story!!! Definitely recommend this book.

I love Jay Bell "Something like" series if you are thinking about getting this book do it, trust me you won't regret it . Once you read just one book your going to want to read the rest. And don't skip "Hell's Pawn" it ties into the series down the line. Can't wait to read the rest of his books.

After completing the something like seasons I can now write the long overdue review. When I first read the sample I actually discarded it at first. The reason was that I’m not into romance novels, but after reading it a second time I couldn’t put it down. I like the characters that the author created and the main character in this story. Even though it was mainly about Ben side of the story and how he meets Tim, and along with the struggles they went through. It kept me interested in the story the author created. The ending in this story hit home for me in my own opinion on a page in the book. Overall the first book in the series was the good read and I’m not going to give away anything, but I do recommend viewers to read it. it’s good in the other three books.
