Wow. I just bought this yesterday and it is packed with fantastic exercises. I can tell this will take me a few months to go through. It starts with variations on freewriting that help you open up the ability for beautiful words to come out, then focused freewriting so you can explore certain subjects, audiences, and character points of view. It shows you not just how to expand your words, but make them more likely to come to mind when you actually go to write sentences. The book goes on with exercises to enhance your ability to come up with beautiful phrases using specific parts of speech and moves on to constructing sentences with variety and intrigue. The last parts of the book help you pull all of this together into compositions with rhythm and variation. I may have only done a few exercises so far, but I'm hooked. Barbara Baig doesn't even seem to mention how this will help you overcome writer's block, but I'm thinking I won't be facing that issue anytime soon. It's nice to see simple freewriting exercises result in something more poetic and refined than simple word vomit.
