Purpose: Staffing is viewed as a barometer of the overall health of our nation's healthcare system. This book is designed to be an overview of resource management with a focus on staffing systems. Multiple authors present their best practices across clinical settings and geographic regions. Such a book is needed and timely, given the recurring and current nursing shortage.
Audience: Nurse managers are the intended audience. The contributors are all practicing nurse executives with practical recommendations on the subject. The editor is internationally known and adds a credible vision to the design of the book.
Features: The editor traverses the subject of staffing plans, the principles of resource management, and provides case studies to illustrate what the book purports to be — "best practices." No authority or governing body sanction is given for these "best practices," so readers must judge their efficacy for themselves. Noticeably absent is a serious discussion on FTE calculation. Also, the methodology for calculating nursing hour per productivity unit is minimally addressed.
Assessment: This is a welcome addition, especially given readers' heightened awareness of staffing concerns related to a current nursing shortage. The case is made for effective staffing philosophies that allow for optimizing quality of patient care in a cost-effective manner. The push-pull of these conflicting needs is well addressed.
