About the Author

The Livermore Valley Charter Prep (LVCP) International Program brings students from around the globe to our charter college prep high school located 45 miles southeast of San Francisco. As students, we gain academic knowledge and English language proficiency while attending classes and exchanging cultural experiences with a diverse group of students from the local area.

LVCP is a project-based learning school that implements curriculum designed across all subjects, using essential questions and "big ideas" with project components that include writing, art and technology. We are also a digital school where students utilize laptops and digital portfolios, and complete assignments via Google Docs and Google Drive.

Because of our smaller size and progressive focus, LVCP gives students unique opportunities to take ownership and become true participants in their own learning in a variety of ways including:
- performing two twenty-minute presentations of learning each year in front of faculty, parents and peers
- providing critical feedback on our programs and curriculum
- taking part in an Advisory class four times a week designed to prepare them for college
- participating in self-initiated and school-wide community service projects (25 hours+ per year)
- designing/maintaining a digital portfolio for their work that features highlights of their projects and learning for each class
