CHAPTER 1

SCRUFFY FINDS A HOME

Once upon a time there was a little old lady and a little old man. They lived in a cute little house on a nice, quiet street. They were very happy, but sometimes the little old lady felt there was something missing from their lives. You see, the old lady had long dreamed of having a puppy of her very own.

Each time she would speak of her dream, the old man would bellow, "We don't need a dog in this house!'

The old lady would sigh and think to herself, Old man, why must you be so grumpy? From time to time, the old lady would speak of her dream, and each time the old man's answer was the same. So the little old lady was sad to think that her dream would never come true.

Now the years passed, and one fine spring morning, the old man said to his wife, "Old woman, I want to give you a very special present." You cannot imagine the old woman's surprise and delight when the old man said, "I want to give you a puppy of your very own!

"Thank you, old man!" exclaimed the old lady. "There is no finer gift you could ever give me!"

So the little old lady and the little old man got into their big blue truck and drove to a faraway place to see a lady named Chloe, who had many puppies to sell.

When they arrived at Chloe's house, they found an old, broken-down shack with a strange-looking woman on the front porch.

"Hello, my name is Chloe. Come inside and see my puppies."

The old lady whispered, "Surely there cannot be a puppy for us here." But the old man insisted that they go inside and take a look.

Inside, the house was as creepy looking as outside, but sure enough, there were the cutest puppies you ever did see scampering across the floor. The old woman squealed with delight as they tried to find the one they liked best. Suddenly the old man spotted a little puppy dog face peeking out from behind a playpen.

"Look," he exclaimed, "that is the puppy for us!"

Hiding in the corner was a precious little puppy with big, brown eyes, a button nose, floppy ears, and a silky coat of black, brown, and chestnut. He was so tiny he fit right in the palms of their hands. It was love at first sight! They needed to look no further. The old lady's dream had come true. There was only one question to answer.

"What shall we call our little friend?" asked the old lady.

"That's easy!" answered the old man. "We shall call him Scruffy." So the happy old couple thanked Miss Chloe and returned home with their little puppy.

Scruffy loved his new house and yard. Most of all, he loved the old man and the old woman and became their devoted companion. So the old couple was happier than ever, and the old man was never grumpy again because of one little scruffy dog who filled his heart with joy!
