Description: Both volumes of Succeeding in Pediatric Surgery Examinations present the majority of information needed, particularly for written board examinations, in two different formats. Volume one asks all its questions in a multiple-choice format. Following each question, the preferred answer is displayed followed by a discussion of the reasoning for the answer. In volume two, the same information (chapter for chapter) is presented in the extended matching question format. Once again the preferred answer is given with a discussion similar to the one in volume one to justify the response. The editors indicate that these two formats cover most of the questions found on pediatric surgery qualifying examination around the world.
Purpose: The editors state their purpose thus: "The title of the book speaks for itself. This book is indeed a complete resource...; all that is essential for succeeding in paediatric surgery examinations." The British spelling reveals the influence of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons (BAPS) on this effort, as indicated in the foreword by Dr. Lander, chair, Education and Training Committee for BAPS. However, at least 100 contributors from various programs in the U.K., the U.S., and Canada have contributed to the 84 chapters.
Audience: The primary audience for these two volumes certainly will be those in training programs who are preparing for qualifying examinations. However, because the book is so thorough, it will be valuable to any person who wishes to review and learn more in the field of childhood surgery.
Features: As is true for most books on pediatric surgery, these volumes are divided into sections on a general theme or an anatomical system. Consequently, there are four sections devoted to general development, trauma, oncology, and critical care. Seven sections focus on organ systems such as the heart, the gastrointestinal tract, liver and bile ducts, etc. They end with a Special Areas section that includes nine chapters on transplantation, bariatric surgery, fetal surgery, and ancillary areas still much a part of pediatric surgery in various parts of the world, such as orthopedics and radiology. Each chapter closes with further readings.
Assessment: Both volumes run to 800 pages, and they are comprehensive and current. They are a nice addition to the material that should be available to all young trainees in pediatric surgery and will prove an invaluable study aid.
