Ben Frost's soundtrack to
Super Dark Times, an American drama about a group of bored, destructive teens living in upstate New York in the '90s, isn't quite as intense or overwhelming as much of the Australian composer's work. There are some noisy moments, such as "True Lies," but it largely focuses on creating suspense rather than expressing the adrenaline rush of an attack. There's room for some tender moments, such as the vulnerable "I Have No Maximum Velocity" and "Do You Want Me to Go?," and slow techno kick drums provide a heartbeat on tracks such as "Skittles Is Fucking Delicious" and both parts of "Minesweeper." Titles such as "If Anybody Asks, We're Already Fucked" indicate the calm sense of dread, fear, and defeat that this music creates. The entire album is short, at just under half an hour, and while it isn't as essential as some of
Frost's other albums, such as
A U R O R A, it still demonstrates his mastery at constructing a chilling atmosphere. ~ Paul Simpson
