Chapter One

Demystifying the Modern Mystic

If you advance confidently in the direction of your dreams, and endeavor to find the life you have imagined, you will meet with the success unexpected in common hours. You will pass an invisible boundary, new, universal and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around you, and you will live with higher order for beings. ~ Thoreau, Walden; or, Life in the Woods ~

In today's world, it is easy to come across Modern Mystics, but if they're doing their work with intention, you might have difficulty picking them out of a crowd. Truly, they're everywhere on the planet and, for the most part, doing their sacred jobs in a quiet way. They come from all walks of life, from diversified ethnic backgrounds, and from a variety of learning experiences. Modern Mystics are everyday, common people in different stages of their spiritual quests. Although Modern Mystics respect every faith, they usually lean toward spiritual connections rather than doctrinaire religions. They are born knowing how to connect to eternal truth and the radionics, or rhythm of energy, within the Universal Life Force. They know how to use unlimited energies in compassionate and humanitarian ways.

Modern Mystics do not seek to be flashy, egocentric, or prideful. They do not attempt to rise above the crowd. They recognize each other by commonalities of spiritual living and teach best by example. Specifically, they strive to become a stellar example of the unconditional love and compassion exemplified by the Dalai Lama. Yes! All Modern Mystics are capable of manifesting this type of behavior. They "walk their talk" with a quiet leadership demeanor. They carry an aura about them that draws people into a safe harbor of love, compassion, trust, and truth. They are part of the unseen force, the glue that holds together the divine plan.

The Cosmic Mission

Modern Mystics are genuine humanitarians. Principles of altruism inspire their work, and they feel satisfaction knowing they did their duty with no expectation of praise, gifts, or gratitude.

The protection and preservation of Mother Nature is a primary concern of Modern Mystics. Mother Earth, our nurturing planet, is out of balance and in need of healing. Modern Mystics know this and recognize earth's energy as the umbilical cord to all life-forms on the planet. We give thanks to the activists and peacekeepers of Mother Earth.

Some Modern Mystics look after the waters, such as lakes, streams, and oceans, protecting aquatic life-forms and attempting to correct health issues that have been created from ignorance, greed, or harmful intent. I thank them for monitoring the wholesomeness of the food that comes from these bodies of water.

Other Modern Mystics look after the earth's atmosphere, which has lost its healthy balance between the ozone layer and life- giving breath. This has been a great concern to those working with knowledge of potential catastrophes caused by global warming.

Others look after the rain forests and all the medicine and foods they produce. Some Modern Mystics serve as plant guardians, who keep the purity of foods growing on the planet in balance between natural wholesomeness and humanity's greed.

We have been told many times that these problems of imbalance are nipping at our heels; ancient and modern prophecies describe this situation on a collective calendar. For the most part, however, our modern society has forgotten how to connect with Mother Earth and her life-supporting elements of air, water, fire, earth, plants, minerals, metals, and the etheric.

In more peaceful times, when humans ritualized daily prayer in order to give gratitude to Mother Earth, there was balance between her and the humans she supported. After much neglect and many harmful events, we are now being held responsible. We see the consequences of our misconduct and forgotten karmic assignments. In these more precarious times, we are being asked to pray and sacrifice to help heal the earth. Many places around the world are experiencing earthquakes, droughts, floods, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornados, cyclones, fires and volcanic eruptions. These situations, as well as other human-made chaos, bring with them death, destruction, and purging. All of these conditions ultimately bring healing and balance to the larger system.

Modern Mystics, who dedicate their lives to help protect, heal and preserve the planet, are the people whose power will bring lasting positive change for all life-forms. The Modern Mystic's spiritual cause constitutes surrendering to divine plans. Enlightened Modern Mystics are working on their assignments—their personal causes—with love, compassion, enthusiasm, and passion. They break the mold of outdated beliefs, thus allowing themselves to go beyond earthly or physical limitations. They work with spiritual connections at higher frequencies. They answer to a different drummer. They are the ones who will help balance science with metaphysics, religion, and spirituality.

Working with the harmonics of heart, mind, and Soul, Modern Mystics seek to connect with the past, to preserve the present, and to protect the future. They recognize the connection of everything on earth, knowing that we are all One. They recognize the importance of preserving this "oneness of life" philosophy. For humankind to work together to protect our sacred Mother Earth on all levels, Modern Mystics work as a team, and they strive to do this without fear, anger, hate, prejudice, jealousy, or ego. They are filled with respect, awe, and gratitude for all life-forms in both the seen and unseen worlds. This attitude of oneness leads to an inquisitive road of adventure and self-discovery in our relationship with all life. Nothing expresses this better than the Lakota expression Mitakuye Oyasin, which means, "We are all related."

Universal Tools

Sacred Sites

Modern Mystics are drawn to power places and sacred sites on the planet. These special places are located all over Mother Earth and are known as vortexes, portals, energy sources, or healing sites. They heal, rejuvenate, and energize people on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. As outlined in the etheric world's Law of Vibration, every site has a different vibration and is known for emitting specific healing powers and radionics relating to chakric vibrations. These vibrations are fine-tuned to radiate within energetic spheres, enabling identification of the various energies given off by human, natural, etheric, and other energy sources. Modern Mystics sense where and when the power radiates from these sacred sites; they respond to an inner calling to work with the Ancient Ones who protect and hold the energy in these places.

When called, Modern Mystics go through synthesis with divine timing. These trips usually represent an adventure and are undertaken with trust in a divine plan and Divine Grace. These trips also provide an invitation to get to know oneself, one's ancestors, and one's lifetime plan. Most of these sacred sites are kept secret to help preserve their sanctity through Universal Laws. Those who are honorable, trustworthy, and answer to a higher karmic responsibility keep these laws sacred. In their position of responsibility, Modern Mystics work without ego in partnership with the unseen world and each other.

Sacred sites are often used for ceremony, attunements, and enlightenments. Spiritual people are drawn to these places for the purpose of personal healing and inner work. Those who are called on such pilgrimages are being invited to receive knowledge and wisdom. Some might be called to help hold the power of a particular sacred site, helping to activate the magnetics and harmonics at an auspicious time for the planet. Once they arrive, Modern Mystics might experience an activation of "ancient memory," but it's best to go without expectations. Experiences at these sites are always individual, auspicious, and occur with divine timing. Particular memory associations bring a point of understanding to the Mystic's personal relationship with the universe. However, if it happens, this realization might not arrive all at once and might, in fact, require many years to fully manifest.

Each time I have traveled to this type of sacred site, I have had unique and enlightening experiences, and they always have been for my highest good. After reaching this new level of awareness, all of my opinions of self-identity and "reality" were shattered. I believe that this process of identifying spirit with self, personality, and ego is a type of rebirthing, through which a Mystic's universal relationship with all living things past, present, and future is experienced.

Feelings of unity, miracles, evolution, grace, purpose, and synthesis are no longer tied to old belief systems of individualism and separateness. This transformation reveals the inner correlation to unseen worlds that guides spiritual commitment in this lifetime. It becomes apparent that ageless universal beliefs of unity work best for the highest good of humankind and other life-forms. Original energies remain alive and well in these sacred places, if they are protected from neglect or abuse and are treated with respect. Modern Mystics take responsibility for the precious gifts and tools they have been exposed to.

Universal Laws and the Paranormal

Whatever Modern Mystics do in their work-a-day world is false reality; they are never separated from the Higher Self. They seem more connected to the spiritual world than the earthly plane, but living in duality is just an earthly illusion anyway. Modern Mystics are not afraid of paranormal or mystical manifestations, which often show the way to healing and transformation. For example, the Law of Attraction will manifest whatever and whenever it is needed. It did for me in the week just previous to my finishing the first full draft of this manuscript—when a person appeared to edit my book. The synchronicity occurred in conjunction with a series of trips: a friend was going to New Mexico and then back to her home in Hawaii; the editor was living in New Mexico at the same time and was planning to move to the Big Island. Meanwhile I was planning to meet my friend and accompany her to Hawaii for ten days.

My friend and the editor first met when they had appointments at the same chiropractor's office at the same time. They chatted there, and my friend invited her to join us in Hawaii. I definitely needed help finalizing that draft of the manuscript, so timing was most auspicious for us all. I have no doubt that the universe was in charge, and my mission was to recognize the gift I was being given.

Sometimes a cosmic gift might test us. No matter what, personal and loyal dedication— without ego—is necessary for Modern Mystics to feel as One with Divine Grace, and to be receptive to divine guidance. They must reach a certain spiritual maturity (which has nothing to do with chronological age) to be able to work within the knowledge and wisdom of Universal Laws, such as the Law of Attraction. These Laws are the truths that always have been and will always be; practical applications of them are scattered throughout this book. You will also find a list in the Appendix.

Another essential Law is that of Cause and Effect (Karma), which is vital for the Modern Mystic. This Law states that whatever we do has a consequence—and its positive effect is stated in a prayer commonly heard from the lips of one of my spiritual teachers, Ben Rhodd: "Good Health and Happiness for all." When we have good health and happiness, nothing else is needed in our lives. If we use this law for the highest good of all concerned, it will bring lasting global stability, unconditional love, unity, peace, harmony, and balance to all life—the attributes under the Law of Karma. This is possible thanks to the current birthing of the Golden Age of Enlightenment.

Universal Laws will be taught to generation after generation. For example, children can be taught—and understand—the Law of Karma very early. When people use the principles of Universal Laws to create balance on the planet, humanity will be working with hearts, minds, and Souls in unity with all that is. This type of balance is necessary for civilization to survive holistically. It brings with it the capability to feel and express unconditional love and compassion to self and all living things, which are major harmonic elements of Universal Laws.

Modern Mystics convey these elements to others as well as to themselves. Hearts and minds working as a unit bestow insight and foster innate wisdom that underlies everything Modern Mystics do, feel, think, or say. They know what is false or true, and will act and think accordingly, thereby reaping the positive benefits of the Law of Cause and Effect.

Through their power of creation and belief systems, Modern Mystics know that manifestations of the universe are expressions of their own creativity. They believe that this life, with all its gifts and lessons, is what has been created for their Highest Good. They participate and co-create with the universe, bringing experiences that are only a mystical moment away from being manifested into personal reality.

The more the Laws of the Universe are applied and put into practice, the faster requests will manifest. This gift is every human's divine right. For example, Modern Mystics might have out-of-body experiences, near-death experiences, déjà vu, past-life regressions, dreams, and visions. Modern Mystics are familiar with miracles, because they are open and willing to accept and embrace them. And by moving through these mystical moments of miracles, manifestations, the paranormal, and extraordinary experiences, they acquire knowledge of true reality.

Healing Modalities

In order to understand themselves better, Modern Mystics participate in a variety of holistic healing modalities that usually involve some type of higher-frequency energy work. All of these encompass body, mind, and Soul. These might include Reiki treatments, hands-on healing, massage, rebirthing, Watsu, fasting, cleansing, chiropractic, acupuncture, iridology, energetics, chakra and/or aura balancing, and karma cleansing. Many others are available, and interested Mystics should conduct research to identify the modalities that might work best for them.

Some Modern Mystics have mystical healing experiences at sacred sites. Others might take the Red Road, the path of North American indigenous peoples that incorporates spiritual practices such as vision quests, drumming, shamanic work, healing ceremonies, and sun dance. Healing might come through initiations or after years of spiritual practice and meditation. Many other types of ceremonies and practices, such as Yoga, T'ai Chi, Qigong, and martial arts, are all ancient methods of reclaiming wisdom and spiritual energies.

Modern Mystics also might visit psychics for readings. Many breakthroughs can occur during a metaphysical counseling session when it includes levels beyond the physical.

Finally, mystical moments can result from chanting, music and color therapies, self-help workshops, motivational retreats, reading an inspiring book, or the repetition of specific lifetime experiences. The latter might signal an auspicious time for a healing opportunity, where an uncompleted karmic lesson can be resolved.

Modern Mystics can experience feelings of restlessness or other unidentifiable yearnings, which might mean time for change. Modern Mystics know and understand these feelings very well. "Hold onto your hat," they say, "here we go again!"

When excitement is in the air, a new adventure is about to take place, and such moments are predestined and auspicious. The search is on. Modern Mystics actively seek the meaning of each inner call and are ready to move down the adventurous road that spirit presents.

Survival Tools for Chapter One Demystifying the Modern Mystic

From the beginning, this manuscript was meant as a healing tool. During a conversation with a friend, we shared some of the great results from using each chapter in a meditation class—and she suggested incorporating that approach as a self-help tool at the end of each chapter. Great idea!

To receive full benefit from this process, it is helpful to keep a daily journal of the work you do. Be sure to date it; I found that when I went back and reread my own entries, I could track where I was coming from and when. The journal is not just a measurement of time, but also one of growth, often in more than one dimension.

In Chapter One we learned that there is no mystery to being a Modern Mystic, that we are everyday, ordinary humans.

In order to identify a Modern Mystic, it is helpful to consider these questions:

• What is a Modern Mystic?

• Who are today's Modern Mystics?

• What qualities make up a Modern Mystic?

• Why should I look "inward"?

• Where am I on the path of the Modern Mystic?

These questions are answered with clarity when we spend time in meditation and use the technique of asking our Higher Self.

One of the personal tools I use is the "inner viewing" technique. If I find myself in doubt or feel that I need to resonate with body, mind, and spirit, I check inside myself. I continue to ask questions that pertain to the situation until I achieve a clarity that feels complete. I dialog with myself about the situation. Yes, in this case talking to yourself is healthy.
