Overview

Symptoms and signs in neurology and psychiatry typically present in the clinical context of other underlying conditions. About the Author

Alan B. Ettinger is the Medical Director at Safe Passage EEG Services based in New York. He is a former Professor in the Department of Clinical Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, and President of the Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island.

Deborah M. Weisbrot is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical Center of the State University of New York, Stony Brook and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr Weisbrot's current clinical work is as a consulting psychiatrist for several therapeutic schools and she has researched and published widely on psychiatric comorbidities of neurological disorders. She lectures nationally in the US on the critical issue of school threat assessment.

Casey E. Gallimore is an Associate Professor at the School of Pharmacy of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, which she joined in 2007 and where she currently teaches in the areas of mental health pharmacy and pharmaceutical care skills. Dr Gallimore practices one day per week at Access Community Health Centers in Madison where she works with primary care clinicians and the behavioral health team to provide psychiatric pharmacy services.

Description: This is an ambitious book that aims to concisely cover medical and pharmacological topics in neurology and psychiatry in the context of related systemic disease. Most of the book is organized in alphabetical order, so topics have to be located by the index or by browsing the book.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a reference for differential diagnosis and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disease in the context of systemic disorders. The book also addresses adverse reactions of these treatments. It follows the general lines of a prior publication by two of the authors of this book, Neurologic Differential Diagnosis: A Case-Based Approach, Ettinger and Weisbrot (Cambridge University Press, 2014), but this one frames the diagnosis and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disease in the context of systemic diseases. It is a worthy objective, but due to the vast number of topics, it is hard to provide the minutiae and most up-to-date information for every topic. In that sense, the book does not meet its objective. There are notable important topics in both psychiatry and neurology that this book does not address.
Audience: This book is most suitable as a reference for medical students. The topics are not covered in enough depth for psychiatry or neurology residents. I suspect that the book does not meet the needs of its intended audience today, when online searches may produce similar or better results than most of its brief entries. The three main authors are recognized authorities and they have gathered a large team of contributors. Most lead contributors are undisputed authorities in their fields, although there is a mix of academic medicine authors (from instructors to chairpersons) and general practitioners. Most of the entries are coauthored by residents and fellows, as well as medical students. In and of itself this is not a problem, but the lack of depth of many entries make this book at times feel superficial.
Features: The first section, which is most of the book (pages 1-706) is presented alphabetically, covering topics in a random way without any additional organization. Some topics are missing, like ALS (although there is brief mention of ALS in the frontotemporal dementia entry, and an entry on ALS-Parkinsonism-dementia complex), statin-related necrotizing myopathy, etc. Psychiatric topics frequently read like sections of DSM 5, and psychiatric treatment often only addresses pharmacological therapy, disregarding current evidence-based data and recommendations for psychotherapy (such as in OCD).
Assessment: This seems to be an expensive alternative to online searches of the medical topics discussed in this book. The vast majority of the entries are too brief, and some entries read as if they were written by medical students.
