The survivors of Battle Group 72 are stranded on the fringes of known space. The brave men and women under Jonathan's command have already proven themselves in the heat of battle, but now he must further test their resolve, not to mention his own. With enemies at every turn, it seems combat against overwhelming odds is inevitable.

The path Jonathan chooses is laden with danger. One small mistake can lead to the ruin of the entire fleet. Will he steer his intrepid battle group through the stormy waters of the current crisis? Or will he fail, dooming them all to cold deaths in the void, captains and crews going down with their ships?

It is a trial like no other. A crucible that cannot be won with strength alone.

It is his greatest test of mettle yet.

Space battles on the grand scale and heroes whose struggles are realistic and intriguing. Test of Mettle is the next installment of Isaac Hooke's 'Flagship' series. It takes place in the universe first established in the 'Atlas' series about 70 years after the events of that series. It follows Captain Jonathan Dallas as he struggles to return the fleet under his command to human occupied space. While the basic story is good, the conundrum the characters face intriguing, and the inner struggles of the heroes realistic, the odds of the battles and their results seem a bit over the top, at times. However, the technical details are intricate and expansive enough to neatly lay out and explain how the human fleet continues to surmount the seemingly insurmountable odds against them. Overall, this is a good book and an interesting read, especially if you enjoy space battles on the grand scale.

Test of Mettle (A Captain's Crucible #2) by Isaac Hooke continues where Flagship left off but you don't need to have read book one to read this one. It can be read as a stand alone. Hooke is good about catching you up on what you need to know without giving away too many spoilers. Again, this book has all the excitement and suspense you would expect from his novels. Nail biting scenes, battles, suspense, intrigue, lots of action, aliens, psychic on the loose, and so much more. So much fun to read! Twists when you least expect them and a universe filled with unique characters. Great plot. Loved it as much as book 1. Great job!
