Description: Updated from the 2008 edition, this book outlines the guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of hypogonadism and its association with major comorbidities, such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive function, as well as mortality risk.
Purpose: The purpose is to first increase awareness that hypogonadism is common and then provide guidance on diagnosis and treatment. In addition, it also reviews current expert opinions on the approach to hypogonadism and its association with certain comorbidities. These are worthy objectives, as male hypogonadism is often overlooked clinically.
Audience: According to the author, the book is targeted at primary care providers as well as specialists in geriatrics, urology, endocrinology, cardiology, orthopedics, psychiatry, etc. Its concise and readable nature gears it more towards primary care physicians. Also key is that this book is meant for an international audience with reference to guidelines from the U.S. and Europe.
Features: The book covers the diagnosis, etiologies including a focus on late-onset hypogonadism, and treatment of hypogonadism as well as its association with mortality and comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cognitive function, and osteoporosis. It is easy to read and straightforward with references to current trials and comments on the strength of these trials (short-term v. long-term, uncontrolled v. controlled). However, it would be helpful to have the trials cited within the text. There are helpful tables and figures, including a diagnostic algorithm, that summarize important points. Finally, the last section has a series of case vignettes that point out key clinical features.
Assessment: The book adequately summarizes the main points of diagnosing and treating male hypogonadism and emerging research on its associations with mortality and comorbidity. A second edition is justified.
