Description: This third edition medical textbook deals in a general way with the diagnosis and treatment principles of disorders and trauma of the musculoskeletal system.
Purpose: The purpose is to introduce the medical student to some aspects of the basic science and clinical practice of the orthopedic specialty. These objectives are more than adequately met.
Audience: The author's prime audience in preparing this work is the medical student. It is also quite clear that any allied medical professional such as a nurse or therapist will find this work an excellent overview of the musculoskeletal system. The author is an internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon who is fully qualified to write this text.
Features: The book is divided into four sections: Basic Musculoskeletal Science and its Applications; Musculoskeletal Disorders - General and Specific; Musculoskeletal Injuries; and Research. The author systematically covers the more important disorders and injuries in these sections. He appropriately interjects his personal philosophy of the art of medicine as he sees fit. In his writings, he delivers a clear message to the reader: be caring of your patient's human needs.
Assessment: The author is a national Canadian treasure. He chose to stay in Canada when a significant number of his colleagues headed south of the border for more lucrative medical careers. He has been in the forefront of the orthopedic profession for as long as I can remember (more than 28 years). Although he is primarily a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and one can sense that bias in the book, he is able to pass on to the young medical trainee a wealth of invaluable information. I very highly recommend this work of love to all medical students around the world.
