Description: This is the second edition (first edition in 1997) of an illustrated book on pediatric emergency procedures that provides background information, step-by-step illustrations and how-to instructions.
Purpose: The purpose is to codify the experience of the authors in the various hands-on changes used in treating pediatric patients.
Audience: The book is targeted to practitioners and residents who provide medical care to acutely ill or injured children in the emergency department. Sections cover various subspecialty procedures including neonatal, gastroenterology, and pulmonary, which could be helpful to trainees and practitioners in these areas. The reader friendly format and easy to follow directions also make it useful to primary care physicians for certain basic procedures (suturing, lumbar puncture, examining the fearful child, etc.).
Features: A wide variety of procedures is organized into 137 chapters by specialty. The first section covers general concepts including family issues, consent, restraint, and aseptic techniques. The remainder of the book covers procedures ranging from the commonplace otoscopic examination and the approach to the frightened child to the more complex or advanced procedures such as intubation and other invasive procedures. The book is particularly good at describing the advanced invasive procedure, including information about the anatomy, physiology, and indications. This is followed by straightforward, illustrated, step-by-step instructions. The book contains over 1,000 illustrated drawings, many in two colors. New chapters in this edition cover managing the difficult airway, use of tissue adhesives for laceration repair, reimplantation of an avulsed tooth, and use of external defibrillators among others.
Assessment: This is very useful as a reference, and I plan to keep it handy for my practice. It is easy to navigate and to use. It covers a broad variety of procedures in a detailed, illustrated way, which is different from a standard pediatric book. This is more comprehensive than the Atlas of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Shah and Lucchesi (McGraw-Hill, 2006), and more oriented to the actual performance of procedures than the Textbook of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, 5th edition, Fleisher et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2006).
