It’s normally good practice to steer clear of people who are nuts. But not in this case.
The story of The Ohio State University’s beloved mascot, Brutus Buckeye, is a lively account of his life, from his birth in 1965 on a sorority house lawn as a gigantic, papier-mâché head, to who he is today, representing the heart of Buckeye fans around the world. Elected to the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2007, Brutus symbolizes joy, good deeds, and pride for one of the most well-known universities in the nation.

About the Author

Sally Lanyon (née Huber), a student leader at Ohio State, was surprised that her most lasting achievement was creating a big round ball out of chicken wire and papier-mâché, painting a cartoon face on it, and equipping it with shoulder harnesses so a cheerleader could run onto the field at the 1965 Homecoming game. This creation became Brutus Buckeye, Ohio State’s beloved mascot. Her next big surprise was taking 12 years of night and weekend writing classes in order to write “The Great American Novel,” but authoring The Autobiography of Brutus Buckeye, a whimsical adult picture book, instead. She now spends her time as a literacy volunteer and authoring The Brutus Blog.
