Description: This is the second edition of a bedside handbook providing an introduction to the vocabulary and day-to-day activity of the critical care unit.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a beginner's guide to expose readers to the breadth of critical care practice without injecting detail that may confound junior practitioners.
Audience: Upper-level medical students or allied health professionals facing their first exposure to the intensive care unit are the optimal audience for this book, which comes from a mixture of senior trainees and providers in intensive care medicine and anesthesia in the U.K.
Features: Initial presentations focus on the daily workflow in the critical care unit. The book reviews team composition, patient presentation, and specific roles for physiotherapy, nursing, and advanced care providers, pharmacists, and physicians. Subsequent sections cover patient assessment, typical pharmacology, airway management, and an introduction to technologies such as hemodynamic monitors and mechanical ventilation. Initial clinical topics reflect the first hours of trauma management. A lengthy concluding set of chapters discusses management of critical care problems complicating the management of patients in many ICU services. Topics include sepsis, pancreatitis, complications of frailty, bariatric patients, and considerations in end-of-life care, which may be found on any critical care service. Chapters are clearly written with highlights identifying relevant content. The opening page provides an outline for the chapter, typically followed by a brief clinical scenario. The chapter is then organized to discuss management of the patient. The book makes good use of tables to present clinical strategies, key concepts, lists of relevant drugs, and scoring systems. Chapters conclude with a short list of references emphasizing key papers, typically no more than three. There are no illustrations, apart from a small number of ultrasound images. An effective table of contents summarizes text organization while the subject index provides adequate access to content.
Assessment: This second edition has clearly been updated. The emphasis on contemporary topics, such as burnout and the post-ICU syndrome, and review of recent work on frailty and delirium are helpful. For beginners in the ICU, this guide offers the vocabulary of daily life. The opportunity in subsequent editions is to introduce physiological concepts in addition to vocabulary.

I am bamboozled by the high-end contributor list and the end result of all of their hard work under Arora / Laha, to produce an even better second edition! I cannot emphasise enough just how useful this is as a text for senior ITU physicians, for our juniors, our nursing staff and AHP’s. I suggest if you have the time, go down tom the local, yes, book shop (they exist), and pick up a copy.
