About the Author

Jane O’Connor was born and raised in the fabulous metropolis of New York City. That’s where she still lives with her husband, Jim, although both their grown sons did something unfathomable (that means impossible to understand). They moved to the West Coast! Besides writing the Fancy Nancy series and other books for children, Jane spent her whole career as an editor at major publishing houses. Recently retired, she finds herself with something she never had before—free time to do whatever she pleases.

Robin Preiss Glasser has illustrated many acclaimed picture books, including the bestselling Fancy Nancy series, Lambslide, Escape Goat, and Grand Jeté and Me: A Christmas Holiday Book for Kids. She won the Children’s Choice Award for Best Illustrator of the Year for Fancy Nancy and the Mermaid Ballet. Robin actually wore tiaras and tutus when she danced with the Pennsylvania Ballet. Now she happily spends her days in jeans, drawing. Robin and her family live in Southern California.

In each story, Nancy comes up against a world that insists on suppressing her affinity for fanciness. For example, she succeeds in fancying up her family for a night on the town, only to be tripped up by her own extravagance; she's forced to miss her best friend's butterfly birthday party when she has to attend her grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary get-together; she longs to be cast as a glamorous mermaid in the ballet, but instead is given a role as a dull willow tree. Each story is performed with adorable enthusiasm by 10-year-old Chloe Hennessee, and enhanced minimally by occasional sound effects, such as a dog barking or glass breaking. Hennessee’s inflection is that of a youngster whose mercurial emotions range from from oo-la-la ecstatic to just plain mad, MAD! As narrator, Hennessee is authoritative but not bossy as she explains the meanings of the many fancy (and often French) words Nancy uses. Sound effects enhance the production.
