The Blue Lady
Guitarist Doug Munro's trio set is well-rounded, ranging from funky struts and a blues ("The Blue Lady") to a calypso ("Mambo De Peg") and the chord changes of "I Got Rhythm" ("Put Through Changes"). Munro, the dominant soloist on every selection, sounds a lot like John Scofield in spots, if a touch more rock-oriented. Although his distorted tone is probably not for all jazz listeners, the guitarist's improvisations (which are creative within the structure of the pieces) are rewarding and show a lot of talent. Bassist Will Lee and drummer Will Calhoun are excellent in support of what is very much Doug Munro's show.
