About the Author

Daniel Defoe was an English writer, merchant, and spy, born in 1660 in London. He is best known for his novel Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719, which has become one of the most translated works in history. He married Mary Tuffley in 1684, with whom he had several children, including Hannah, Sofia, Benjamin, Henrietta, and Daniel. Defoe passed away on 24 April 1731 at the age of 71. Alexandre Olivier Exquemelin, born in 1645 in Honfleur, France, was a notable French, Dutch, or Flemish writer. He is best known for The Buccaneers of America, first published in 1678. The book serves as a critical source for understanding 17th-century piracy, detailing the lives of pirates in the Caribbean. Exquemelin's writing provided a vivid account of the seafaring outlaws, offering valuable insights into their exploits. He died in 1707 in Harfleur, France.
