Will somebody please tell Bernard Knight that an "apprentice" monk or nun is a NOVICE, not a novitiate. The novitiate is the religious class to which they belong. Specifically, a novice is in the novitiate, or a member of the novitiate. This is not the first time he has made this irritating mistake.
