About the Author

Papus (1865-1916) was the esoteric pseudonym for the French physician and hypnotist Gérard Encausse. He was a member of he Theosophical Society, shortly after it was founded, and went on to found the modern Martinist Order. He dedicated much of his life to study of the occult, especially the Tarot and Kabala, while also receiving his medicine degree from the University of Paris. He died in 1916, during the First World War, after joining the French army medial corps.
