Lonigan (European languages and literatures, City U. of New York) offers the first full length scholarly study of the Druids by an American. He is primarily concerned with the etymology of words and names, and analogues between Roman and Celtic practices and figures. Unlike many previous scholars he insists that the evidence of Irish tradition, though recorded late and influenced by Christianity, is valid and useful.
