Overview

When girl meets Duke, their marriage breaks all the rules…

Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury’s to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne’er-do-wells by night. Now there’s a new item on the list. He needs an heir—which means he needs a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar’s daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she’ll do.

His terms are simple:

- They will be husband and wife by night only.

- No lights, no kissing.

- No questions about his battle scars.

- Last, and most importantly… Once she’s pregnant with his heir, they need never share a bed again.

But Emma is no pushover. She has a few rules of her own:

- They will have dinner together every evening.

- With conversation.

- And unlimited teasing.

- Last, and most importantly… Once she’s seen the man beneath the scars, he can’t stop her from falling in love…

This is a beautiful story with wonderful characters. Ash and Emma are perfect. I love background history of the main characters. I could not stop reading it. I can't wait for more stories from the other friends of Emma. We got to know them only a little! I am sad that the story is over and I will have to wait for more.

Just two adorable characters trying to live in a perfect story. Realistic dialogue and none of that constant arguing that most writers use as sexual tension. Tessa Dare is one of my favorite authors, a truly pure romance writer with an original sense of humor. Enjoy...

One of the best books I've read this year. Witty characters with a true emotional connection to each other. I really didn't want this book to end.

Ms Dare is a wonderful writer and does everything well. If only all writers had her deft touch and her feel for the absolutely right amount of "heat". Great book--get it!

Seamstress Emma Gladstone barges into the Duke of Ashbury’s home and demands payment for a wedding gown ordered by his ex-fiance. There will be no wedding as the spoiled heiress could not abide to look at Ash’s scarred face and body. He makes Emma a proposition. Ash will pay for the appalling dress or he will marry her and make her his duchess for he needs an heir. Emma agrees to marrying him. She sees his scars but also the brave, caring man who wears the scars. She doesn’t mean to fall in love with the grumpy duke but to only abide by their agreement. But love finds a way into both of their hearts. An endearing love story that a true romantic will love.

I read the free sample (too short) and paid $1.99 for this on the past enjoyment that I've had reading Tessa Dares novels. From the sample, both of these people are over the top snarky and extremely unlikable. I can only hope it gets better and I can redo this review but I'm not optimistic

This is an easy read with imaginative swearing, quirky servants and secondary characters. There is great banter between the Duke and his Duchess. I thought the love scenes were well written and steamy enough without going too far. I will seek out more from this author.

Loved it. I love stories about emotionally or physically scarred people getting past impediments together.

I am not certain who the others are who reviewed this book so highly, but if you enjoy a good romance, do not waste your time on this one. I kept thinking it would get better, but around page 180 when the " big misunderstanding" appears, I just had to bail. Maybe it gets better, but I value my time too much to spend any more of it with these characters. The circumstances and dialog are both ridiculous.

I just couldn’t take it any longer, my fellow romance book loving friends. I pushed my long ARC reading list aside and finally delved into a library edition of The Duchess Deal, a 2017 GoodReads Choice Awards nominee. So I’m here now just to post a few very brief comments to officially chalk this one up as a rare 5 star read for me. Emma, the heroine, really made this story for me. She was sassy, quick to give as good as she got, saw straight into the soul of this reclusive, scarred hero, and won over this duke’s stubborn, reluctant, afraid to love heart. You could definitely say Ash, the hero, got a whole lot more than he bargained for when he proposed this marriage of convenience arrangement. Naturally, after reading the synopsis, I was expecting his standoffish behavior and attempts to keep Emma at arms length. What surprised me was his own hidden sense of humor that peeked through in off the cuff comments, back and forth banter, and inner monologues. I can clearly see why this book was nominated. Here’s to hoping you’ll end up enjoying it as much as I did. (These comments are based on a library edition. This is not a detailed advanced reader copy review.)
